Should you make a swatch? Why and how to read it for successful knitting

Knit Sis

Are you starting a knitting project and wondering if you should make a swatch ? The answer is YES, and it's not a detail to overlook! At Knit-sis, we explain why this step is essential to ensure your project is the right size, with the right finish, and above all to avoid frustration. In addition, we guide you step by step to know how to make and read a swatch easily. Ready to knit like a pro? Let's go! 🧶✨

Why is it essential to make a sample?

Making a swatch is a bit like doing a test run before starting the main project. Without it, you risk having a sweater that's too big or too small, a misshapen cardigan, or an uncomfortable garment. In knitting, the tension of your stitches varies depending on the yarn, needle size, and your knitting style.
The gauge allows you to measure precisely how many stitches and rows you knit in 10 cm, for example, to adapt the pattern. This avoids having to undo your work several times (yes, we know the hassle 😅).

How to make a sample?

1️⃣ Choose your needles and yarn : exactly the ones you will use for your project.

2️⃣ Cast on about 30 stitches on your needle (more than the requested gauge width).

3️⃣ Knit in stockinette stitch (or the stitch indicated in the pattern) for about fifteen rows.

4️⃣ Let it sit for a few minutes , then block it if possible (i.e. dampen it slightly and let it dry flat).

5️⃣ Then measure 10 cm in the middle of the sample , counting the number of stitches over this width and the number of rows over 10 cm in height.

How to read and use your sample?

🍬Count the stitches over 10 cm: this is the average width of your stitches.

🍬Count the rows over 10 cm: this will give you the average height.

🍬Compare these numbers with those indicated in the pattern.

🍬If you have more stitches than requested, change to a larger needle (your knitting is too tight).

🍬If you have fewer stitches, take a smaller needle (your knitting is too loose).

Knit-sis Tip : Don't hesitate to repeat the swatch if you change yarn or needles, or if your knitting style evolves. Every project deserves its own test!

Common mistakes to avoid with the sample

🍬Not making a swatch at all (the number 1 cause of knitting failures).

🍬Measure the sample before blocking it (the stitches may stretch after washing).

🍬Not knitting enough stitches or rows (you need a large enough gauge for a reliable measurement).

🍬Forgetting to test complex pattern stitches in the sample (e.g. cables, openwork, jacquard).
