Shawls: knitting pattern & complete guide (tips + free patterns)
Knit SisShare
There is something magical about knitting a shawl ✨
It's the ultimate cocoon project : soft, enveloping, perfect for snuggling up on cool evenings... and always a pleasure to give 💝.
When we started knitting with our grandmother, our very first “big” project was… a shawl. At the time, it was a little wobbly (and we had missed a few yarns 🙈), but we wore it proudly for years.
Today, we want to show you how to choose and knit a shawl that suits you , and above all... we offer you a free pattern to get started without stress!
Why knit a shawl?
(and why we always need one more)
▪️ Versatile : fashion accessory, shoulder warmer, travel blanket...
▪️ Adaptable : from the ultra-simple model to the sophisticated lace stitch.
▪️ Ideal for progressing : perfect for testing new techniques without committing to an entire sweater.
▪️ Fun project : no specific size constraints, we play with dimensions and shapes.
💡 Little extra : a shawl can be knitted in winter wool as well as in light cotton for summer.
The different models of knitted shawls
(and which one to choose according to your level)
1. The triangular shawl
This is the most classic. We often start from a peak and increase until we obtain the desired width.
▪️ Easy : garter stitch, jersey or simple stripes.
▪️ Intermediate to advanced : openwork, lace, jacquard.
📌 Knit-sis inspiration : although our Marguerite vest is not a shawl, it perfectly illustrates the romantic lace spirit that you can integrate into a triangular model.
2. The half-moon shawl
Perfect for a fluid drape around the shoulders. We often play with sections of different stitches.
3. The asymmetrical shawl
Started on the side, it is built with increases on one side only. Modern effect guaranteed ✨.
How to choose the right yarn for your shawl?
▪️ For a winter shawl : merino, alpaca, mohair… warmth and softness.
▪️ For a summer shawl : cotton, linen, bamboo… lightness and freshness.
▪️ To highlight the texture : choose plain or semi-plain yarns.
▪️ For a fun effect : try gradient or multi-colored threads.
💬 In our Doudou sweater , we use a soft yarn that would also be perfect for a cocoon shawl.

Knit-sis tips for a wow-worthy shawl 💫
▪️ Always block your shawl to open the patterns and give a perfect drape.
▪️ Vary the stitch sections to avoid boredom (stripes, lace, moss, etc.).
▪️ Add a contrasting border for a professional finish.
📌 Our Pull Strippie is a beautiful inspiration for playing with colors in a shawl.
