Why knit for your pet?
There are many reasons… and they're so cute 🐶🐱💕
▪️ Protect from the cold (for dogs sensitive to cold, older animals, breeds without an undercoat)
▪️ Create a perfectly fitting garment
▪️ Use your leftover yarn for very small projects
▪️ Coordinate your outfit with your pet's (yes, we approve 1000%)
▪️ A unique gift for an animal-loving friend
Key takeaway: knitting for an animal mainly requires… observing its comfort. If your furry friend moves easily, breathes well, and doesn't try to escape, you're on the right track.
What yarn should I choose to knit a sweater or pet accessory?
Two essential criteria: comfort and durability .
Recommended fibers
▪️ Superwash merino wool : soft, breathable, easy care
▪️ Premium acrylic : strong, perfect for animals that live outdoors
▪️ Cotton : ideal for summer or sensitive animals
▪️ Wool/acrylic blends : the right compromise between warmth and durability
We avoid "hairy" yarns (mohair, blown alpaca) which can tickle or be swallowed.
Ideal thicknesses
For a quick and "animal-friendly" knit:
▪️ DK
▪️ worsted
▪️ Aran
▪️ or 5–7 mm needles
Key takeaway: prioritize softness and easy washing . It will get washed much more often than an adult sweater 😉
How to measure your pet (without starting a chase)
We've developed a simple technique, tested on a very excited beagle 🐕:
1️⃣ Neck circumference : snug but comfortable
2️⃣ Chest measurement : the most important measurement
3️⃣ Back length : from the neck to the base of the tail
4️⃣ Leg opening : width + height
5️⃣ Range of motion : observe how the animal walks (important!)
Lenny's tip: "I give him a small treat with each measurement. After 3 sweaters, he was posing almost like a model."
Adapting an existing Knit-sis pattern for your pet
Good news: you don't need a special animal pattern to knit an adorable little sweater.
You can adapt some of our models into miniature versions.
Here are the easiest ones to convert:
1. Hug – sleeveless sweater
Simple, quick, straightforward construction → perfect for creating an XS animal version.
👉 See the Hug boss
How to adapt it:
▪️ reduce the chest measurement
▪️ shorten the length
▪️ Add two openings for the legs
▪️ Keep the original elastic band for a secure fit
Ideal for small to medium-sized dogs.
2. Strippie – round striped sweater
Stripes are super cute on animals.
👉 See the Strippie pattern
Easy adaptation:
▪️ Knitting in the round in miniature
▪️ keep the simplicity of the raglan
▪️ Play with stripes to use up your leftover yarn
3. Soft toy – free pattern
Perfect for beginners AND perfect for pets.

All you need to do is:
▪️ drastically reduce the number of stitches
▪️ Adjust the widths
▪️ maintain the same soft and fluffy construction
Key takeaway: opt for sleeveless or raglan styles , as they naturally adapt to animals.
Easy-to-knit pet accessories
(perfect little projects for winter + your leftover yarn ✨)
Headband or snood (for protection against the cold)
Simple ribbed tube → protects the neck and ears.
Tip: Use a bright color to make your dog stand out in the park.
Knitted bandana
Triangular, fast, stylish.
We love pairing it with the Festi vest 😍

A stuffed ball, a twisted donut, a mini-carrot…
Be warned: they quickly become obsessed.
Home tips for successfully knitting your animal sweaters
✨ Opt for seamless models : less friction.
✨ Avoid the buttons (risk of ingestion).
✨ Test the garment while knitting: express fitting every 20 rows.
✨ Reinforce the edges (2/2 ribbing or I-cord).
✨ Favor colours that are visible during walks.
✨ Take the weather into account : animals overheat quickly.
Louise's anecdote:
“The first sweater I knitted for Grandma's cat… he walked backwards for 20 minutes. Since then, I ALWAYS adjust the shoulder width 😅”
Key takeaway: the secret to good animal knitting is freedom of movement + softness + no dangerous elements .
