The importance of basis points

Mastering the basic stitches of knitting is essential to progress in this activity. Garter stitch, stocking stitch and ribbing are the foundations on which you will build all your projects. By understanding these stitches well, you will be able to read diagrams and make more complex models.

The necessary equipment

To complete these stitches you will need:

  • Knitting needles : Choose a size that suits your yarn and project.
  • Wool : Choose a wool that is easy to work with for beginners.
  • A stitch marker (optional, but useful for keeping track of rows)

With this material, you are ready to get started!

Garter stitch

Garter stitch is the easiest stitch to make. It gives an elastic and slightly wavy look to the work. To knit it, simply knit all the stitches on all rows.

The jersey stitch

Stockinette stitch is the most commonly used stitch in knitting. It gives a smooth and regular appearance to the work. To knit it, alternate the right and wrong rows.

The ribs

Ribbing is a stretchy pattern formed by alternating knit and purl stitches on the same row. 1x1 ribbing is the easiest to make. It consists of knitting one knit stitch then one purl stitch on every row.
