Looking for an adult sweater pattern that's out of the ordinary, without being too complicated? The Broccoli Sweater is for you. With its slightly openwork and textured Broccoli stitch, its loose and enveloping fit, and its top-down construction with raglans, this knitting pattern is a true gem to add to your project list. A sweater that practically knits itself… and makes you want to start all over again!
The pattern is available in French and English 🇫🇷🇬🇧
✨ Why we love it
The Broccoli stitch is that little something extra that makes this sweater irresistible. Both structured and airy, it creates a beautiful visual relief that evolves row by row under your fingers — and frankly, it's almost addictive. You want to keep going, to see the pattern form, to knit one more row (and then another…).
Its loose and cozy fit envelops the body without compressing it, for optimal comfort on cooler days. It's the kind of sweater you curl up in with a cup of tea, and instinctively grab from your closet.
And for knitting? The top-down construction with well-guided raglans makes assembly super pleasant: no seams to sew, a homogeneous result, and a pattern that holds your hand from the first stitch to the double collar. Even if you've never knitted a top-down sweater before, the explanations are there for you!
🎁 A perfect project to give (or treat yourself to!)
Looking for a knitted gift idea made with love? The Broccoli Sweater is a project you can knit again and again, in different colors, for yourself or for the people who matter to you. A nude mohair yarn for winter, a terracotta shade for autumn, an off-white for spring… the possibilities are endless.
It's also the ideal pattern to offer to a knitter who wants to try textured stitches or explore top-down construction for the first time. Accessible, well-explained, with links to YouTube tutorials: everything is designed to make the experience a pleasure from beginning to end.

🧶 Pattern Construction: Top-Down
This adult sweater pattern is constructed in a progressive and structured way for a perfect fit right from the start:
- The back is knitted first, with increase-on-previous-row increases to provide ease and form the base of the raglan.
- The shoulders: stitches are picked up, and increases are made on the neckline side for a harmonious opening.
- The front is knitted following the textured Broccoli pattern.
- Joining: front and back are joined to knit the body in the round up to the twisted ribbing borders.
- The sleeves: formed by picking up stitches under the arms, with some decreases, then twisted ribbing borders.
- The double collar: stitches picked up along the neckline for an elegant and comfortable collar, bound off using a provisional cast-on method.
📚 Techniques Used
- Knit stitch, purl stitch
- Twisted rib
- Raglan: right-leaning increase-on-previous-row (RLI) and left-leaning increase-on-previous-row (LLI)
- Bind off (classic and tubular)
- Yarn over / 4 stitches together / 3 stitches together / 2 stitches together — 👉 YouTube Tutorial: the Broccoli stitch
- Bind off provisionally (for the collar) — 👉 YouTube Tutorial
- Pick up stitches on the wrong side — 👉 YouTube Tutorial
Each technique is explained in the pattern, and links to video tutorials are included to guide you step-by-step. You'll never be alone!
🌿 Textured Adult Sweater Pattern: What is the Broccoli Stitch?
The Broccoli stitch is an original knitting stitch that alternates yarn overs and multiple decreases (4 stitches together, 3 stitches together) to create a slightly openwork, highly graphic texture. It's more accessible than it seems: once you get into the rhythm, the pattern repeats hypnotically. This is one of the great pleasures of this pattern, watching the texture form row after row, and not being able to stop.
If you're looking for a knitting pattern with a textured stitch, a top-down sweater with an openwork stitch, or a project to explore multiple decreases in knitting, the Broccoli Sweater is exactly what you need.
